Free, Legal Music Downloads…

People always ask me where they can get new and free music legally so I thought I would just post where I get most of my stuff.

NoiseTrade: You can upload your own music to get it out into the world or download music from tons of really amazing artists. I mean, a lot of it is really unknown indie artists but if you give them a chance, you’ll fall in love with many of them. I know I have.

Popstache: They post free music every day from a lot of great musicians. They also post amazing album reviews and some seriously quality mixes. They’re pretty great at keeping a good mix of styles in there too. I could spend hours on this website.

94/7: This is a radio station in Portland that puts out one free song a week and it’s always an amazing song. You have to sign up for their mailing list thing but seriously, it’s worth it and you can download all the songs they’ve had in the past too. And if you’re from the Northwest you get a chance to win concert tickets all the time anyways so why not sign up? You can also listen to the station on the website.

Purevolume: Independent artists put their music out there and while some of it isn’t so great, and that’s putting it lightly, there really are many really great artists on there. A lot of it is a little more on the pop-punk/electronic/hardcore side of things but hey, that just might be your cup of tea.

Bandcamp: Okay, so I know this isn’t technically all free but I have seen artists who post free music, have sales, specials, etc. Many also use the ‘name your price’ feature which lets you choose how much you want to pay for it. I always try and pay how much I think the albums are really worth but you can always pay like a cent for a whole album if you want. I also think the quality of music on Bandcamp is superior to most other websites.

Soundcloud: If you can figure out your way around, Soundcloud is a great way to find free tracks. Once again, it’s not always the greatest quality but I’ve found quite a few gems on there and it probably has the most variety out of all of these.

Blalock’s Indie Rock Playlist: The amount of quality music available on BIRP! is incredible. Every month they release a new playlist of awesome tunes that is definitely worth the few minutes it takes to download the whole thing. There are also mixtapes available for every mood, situation, etc. as well as interviews, reviews, and forums in case you’re interested.
